Tide In, Tide Out

Understanding What Returns -
and Trusting Who You Are Now

A difficult feeling can return without taking your growth with it.

Have you ever felt something old return and immediately thought, I thought I was past this?

Tide In, Tide Out offers a different way to understand the feelings, patterns and responses that resurface – even after you know you have changed.

The tide changes what is visible. It does not change what is true.

When something old returns

You may have been moving through life differently. Speaking more honestly. Trusting your decisions. Responding in ways that show you just how much has changed.

Then something happens.

It might be a conversation, a familiar situation, an unexpected memory – or something so small that you cannot understand why it affected you at all.

An old feeling returns. You react in a way you thought you had left behind. You doubt yourself, withdraw, become angry, overthink what happened or feel the weight of something you believed you had already dealt with.

And almost immediately, the feeling is followed by judgement.

I thought I was past this.

Why am I back here again?

Was any of my progress real?

In that moment, it can be easy to measure all your growth by what has just resurfaced – and to wonder whether anything has really changed.

But what if its return is not the whole story?

A different way to understand what returns

When the tide goes out, it reveals parts of the shoreline that were hidden beneath the water.

The rocks, ridges and marks in the sand have not suddenly appeared. The changing tide has simply made them visible.

Our internal lives can work in much the same way.

An old feeling, doubt or response may return when you are tired, challenged, reminded of something – or standing in circumstances that touch a familiar place within you.

Its return does not automatically mean that your growth has disappeared. It may simply mean that the conditions of this moment have brought something back into view.

And seeing something again is not the same as becoming who you used to be.

You are meeting it with everything you now know, the choices you have made and the self-trust you have built – even when you cannot immediately feel the evidence of any of it.

The tide changes what is visible. It does not change what is true.

Tide In, Tide Out helps you understand what may be happening beneath the thought I am going backwards – so that one returning feeling does not become a verdict on who you are or how far you have come.

What you will explore inside the book

Tide In, Tide Out is not about preventing difficult feelings from returning or expecting yourself to remain unchanged by everything life brings.

It is an invitation to look more closely at what happens when something familiar resurfaces – and at the conclusions you may draw about yourself when it does.

Inside the book, you will explore:

What has returned
How old feelings, doubts, memories and responses can become visible again under different circumstances.

What you make its return mean
Why one difficult moment can quickly become evidence that you have failed, gone backwards or lost the growth you believed you had made.

The landscape beneath the tide
What remains true about you even when changing conditions make it difficult to see.

Who you are now
How to recognise the awareness, knowledge, choices and self-trust you bring to something that may once have felt very different.

How you choose to move

How to meet what has resurfaced without allowing it to define you – or handing one moment the authority to decide who you are.

This is not about controlling the tide.

It is about learning to read what is happening, recognise what remains true and choose how you move from here.

Continue the reflection with the AI companion

The book was written to create space for your own understanding - not to tell you what you should think, feel or discover.

The Tide In, Tide Out AI Companion extends that space beyond the page.

Created specifically for readers of the book, this optional AI-guided companion helps you explore the thoughts, feelings and questions that arise as you read.

You might use it to:

  • reflect on a passage that stayed with you

  • look more closely at something that has resurfaced

  • recognise what remains true beneath the feeling of the moment

  • find words for something you are beginning to understand

  • consider how you would like to move from here

There is no fixed pathway to follow and no right place to begin.

Bring the book, a particular passage, a question - or simply yourself.

Begin wherever you are.

About Nina

2026 beach setting.png

Nina Stanyer is an Australian author, mentor and speaker whose work centres on identity, self-trust and the choices through which women reclaim authority in their own lives.

Drawing on lived experience and her work with women, Nina is particularly interested in the moments that can make capable women question what they know about themselves. Her writing brings language to experiences that are often felt long before they can be explained.

Tide In, Tide Out began with Nina trying to understand one of those moments for herself: how an old emotional response could return so strongly without erasing the person she had become. That question grew into the idea at the heart of this book.

Through her writing, mentorship and speaking, Nina invites women to understand what is happening, recognise who they are now and make their next choice from there.

Nina lives and writes on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

You are not back where you began

Something old may return.

It may feel familiar, unsettling or stronger than you expected.

But you are meeting it from here – not from where you once stood. You bring awareness you did not have then, choices you may not have known were available and a different relationship with your own voice.

Tide In, Tide Out is an invitation to recognise the ground that remains beneath you, trust who you are now and choose how you move from here.

The tide changes what is visible. It does not change what is true.
